Smoking is bad for your Teeth

smoking is bad for your teeth

There are tons of articles written about the dangers of smoking and your health. Even though we are given all kinds of health warnings and information on why to not smoke, as of 2012,  a staggering 18.1% of all adults  or 42.1 million people continue to smoke cigarettes.

Let’s concentrate on your teeth.  Cigarettes are made up of 4000 chemicals. These chemicals, each time you inhale a puff from a cigarette, pass over your teeth and gums.  As the smoke passes over your gums it creates irritation to the gums.  It reduces blood flow and can ultimately lead to damage that results with your gums pulling away from your teeth.  Your chances of developing periodontal disease is much higher if you are a smoker.

What other problems can smoking cause your teeth?

  • Cavities
  • Mouth Sores
  • Oral Cancer
  • Mouth Infections
  • Bone loss in the jaw
  • Inflammation of the salivary glands
  • Delayed healing

Why Quit Smoking?

The benefits of quitting are endless.  The main reason for quitting is knowing over time, that many of the effects from smoking can be reversed.
