Do you remember when you were in high school and the popular kids seemed to have those award winning perfect smiles? I’m sure you were secretly envying them from afar and wondering what great evil you bestowed on yourself to be given such crooked, cavity over run teeth? I know it seemed like every time you went to the dentist, cavities needed to be filled. Then finally your told braces are needed. Your thinking “just great”! “Metal needs to be put in my mouth to corral my teeth from escaping”?
The big question is, are bad teeth hereditary? The truth is, only part of the blame can be put on your mom and dad. Perfect teeth are not just products of genetics but do play a part in the grand design.
There are many conditions directly related to genetics that can affect your teeth. For example:
- Hypodontia- the absence of teeth
- Oligodontia- missing more than 6 teeth
- Anadontia- complete lack of teeth
- Position of teeth- Misaligned teeth
- Surface crevices- grooves that allow for the growth of bacteria
- Saliva- natural ability to fight off cavities
As for the genetic components listed, the absence of teeth is rare. More commonly seen are position of teeth issues, surface crevices or saliva. The good news is these conditions can be effectively treated with modern dental treatments.
So how do you maintain a healthy beautiful smile?
- Start children going to the dentist at age 2
- Opt for Sealants on kids teeth
- Use enough but not too much fluoride
- Brush Twice a day
- Floss Daily
- Rinse or chew gum after meals
- Mouth Guards for sports
- Don’t Smoke
- Eat Healthy
- Avoid foods high in sugar
- See your dentist regularly
To all our wonderful patients:
The office will be closed the week of May 26th through May 31st. We will resume our normal business hours on June 2nd.

Temporary Solution… NOT the Answer for True Dental Needs!
Snap-On Smile is a great product for those looking to makeover their smile without undergoing extensive dental procedures. It works exactly like it sounds, a new set of “teeth” are created that are placed over your current teeth by snapping them in place. You can have a beautiful new smile in just two quick and painless visits to our office.
Snap-On Smile is a great option for patients who are looking to enhance their smile for temporary visual purposes. This would include in our office; TV, Beauty Pageants or Modeling. On your first visit with us you will pick the shade and style of your smile. We will then take an impression of your teeth so the Snap-On Smile can be properly fitted. The Snap-On Smile is then made with a light, durable resin to create a strong yet thin set of snap on teeth. In about three weeks you will return for your next visit where your new smile will be waiting!
The Snap-On Smile will be placed onto your current teeth and you will leave the office with a bright new smile. No drilling, no extractions, no whitening chemicals are necessary – the whole process is quick, easy, and painless.
The Snap-On Smile is a great alternative to the pageant “flipper” because it is custom made for your mouth! This is a great option for children with teeth that have fallen out or that may not be flawless for those important picture perfect moments!
*NOTE* Dr. Glasscock will determine if you are a candidate for the Snap-On Smile.

Too much turkey at Thanksgiving may induce drowsiness and cause you to go to sleep without flossing. From Turkey to yummy dessert its important to remember to brush and floss when you get home! Ironically, the day AFTER Thanksgiving (November 23rd) is National Flossing Day!
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Division of Oral Health (CDC), 54 million people live with untreated tooth decay in their permanent teeth, while the U.S. Surgeon General states that periodontal disease is one of the biggest threats to oral health and one of the most common chronic diseases in the U.S. Rather than becoming a statistic, bite into a new oral health regime on National Flossing Day on Friday, November 23.
In addition to the cosmetic benefits such as fresh breath and cleaner, whiter teeth, flossing has many health advantages. Flossing on a regular basis removes plaque which can cause tartar build-up and reduces the risk of periodontal disease, gingivitis and tooth decay. In addition, you are less likely to lose your teeth and need dentures later in life.
“Nearly half of American adults over 30 and approximately 70 percent of seniors over 65 are afflicted with periodontal disease according to the CDC,” said Kathie Marsh, Dental Assistant program curriculum coordinator for Anthem Education Group. “Now is the time to take charge of your oral health and start practicing proper dental care.”
In honor of National Flossing Day, Anthem Education Group offers five flossing tips:
1. Floss before you brush so fluoride in toothpaste can reach between your teeth. 2. Guide floss between teeth using a back-and-forth motion.
3. Slide floss against the tooth surface and underneath the gum line. Pay attention to teeth next to toothless gaps.
4. Use a threader to assist in flossing if you have braces or other dental appliances.
5. Practice good flossing techniques at least once a day.
