Too much turkey at Thanksgiving may induce drowsiness and cause you to go to sleep without flossing. From Turkey to yummy dessert its important to remember to brush and floss when you get home! Ironically, the day AFTER Thanksgiving (November 23rd) is National Flossing Day!
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Division of Oral Health (CDC), 54 million people live with untreated tooth decay in their permanent teeth, while the U.S. Surgeon General states that periodontal disease is one of the biggest threats to oral health and one of the most common chronic diseases in the U.S. Rather than becoming a statistic, bite into a new oral health regime on National Flossing Day on Friday, November 23.
In addition to the cosmetic benefits such as fresh breath and cleaner, whiter teeth, flossing has many health advantages. Flossing on a regular basis removes plaque which can cause tartar build-up and reduces the risk of periodontal disease, gingivitis and tooth decay. In addition, you are less likely to lose your teeth and need dentures later in life.
“Nearly half of American adults over 30 and approximately 70 percent of seniors over 65 are afflicted with periodontal disease according to the CDC,” said Kathie Marsh, Dental Assistant program curriculum coordinator for Anthem Education Group. “Now is the time to take charge of your oral health and start practicing proper dental care.”
In honor of National Flossing Day, Anthem Education Group offers five flossing tips:
1. Floss before you brush so fluoride in toothpaste can reach between your teeth. 2. Guide floss between teeth using a back-and-forth motion.
3. Slide floss against the tooth surface and underneath the gum line. Pay attention to teeth next to toothless gaps.
4. Use a threader to assist in flossing if you have braces or other dental appliances.
5. Practice good flossing techniques at least once a day.
